For smallFOREST and FORHAIE projects, a training arthropods will take place on Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th at the University of Picardie – Sciences Department – Unit Edysan, laboratory BIPE.

Marc Deconchat and Brice Giffard, Dynafor laboratory (INRA Toulouse), and Pallieter De Smedt, Ghent University (Belgium), will host this two days of training with Vincent Le Roux, Ludmilla Martin and Guillaume Decocq, Edysan research unit FRE 3498.

Day 1

I. Generalities about carabid beetles What is a carabid beetle ? Why using carabid beetles in landscape ecology Taxonomy of carabid beetles : main characteristics, how to recognize a carabid beetles of another arthropods Examples of possible confusions with others arthropods

II.  Relevant criteria to reach the subfamilies and genera of carabid beetles Presentation of simple criteria for each subfamilies How to distinguish species in the genera

III. Species determination: presentation of the determination key used How is it work? Main criteria exposed Difficult criteria

II. Demonstration of individuals (the most abundant and the most difficult species) under a camera using the determination key

III. Practical exercises of determination with individuals and binocular

Day 2

 I.  Presentation of the genus Carabus Main criteria for recognition Demonstration of some species

II.  Presentation of other arthropods groups (mainly spiders) Why using spiders ? Criteria for spiders determination Presentation of other potential interesting groups for smallFOREST project

III.  Second practice exercise for carabid beetles identification (under binocular)

IV. Specific discussion about WP3 protocol of smallFOREST project
