How the Call for Projects Works
The research component of the E-SENSE project aims to innovate in the energy sector and thus push the boundaries of knowledge across the four areas of the energy value chain (Sustainable Transformation, Storage Sciences, Current/Emerging Uses, and Impacts).
To this end, training dynamic young researchers with a multidisciplinary perspective is essential to developing the scientists of tomorrow, capable of exploring uncharted territory.
Criteria:
This call for projects is open to researchers and research professors within the A2U alliance in one of the E-SENSE thematic areas:
Proposed Funding and Eligible Expenses
For PhD positions:
€60,000 in funding will be provided, supplemented by an operating budget of €15,000 per contract under the call for PhD proposals. Regarding support funds, eligible costs are limited to operating expenses, excluding IT consumables and internships, such as small equipment, consumables, travel or mission expenses, and publication fees.
For postdoctoral positions:
One year of salary will be funded, supplemented by an operating budget of €5,000 per contract. Regarding support funds, eligible costs are limited to operating expenses, excluding IT consumables and internships, such as small equipment, consumables, travel or mission expenses, and publication fees. However, these terms are subject to change at the request of the funding body.
The relevance and quality of the scientific project;
La qualité et la crédibilité du consortium : compétences et expériences réunies au sein du projet, capacité du porteur de projet à répondre aux priorités définies dans l’appel à projets ;
The quality and credibility of the consortium: skills and experience brought together within the project, ability of the project leader to respond to the priorities defined in the call for projects;
The proposed timetable must be realistic while respecting the duration of the contract;
The innovative/structuring nature of the project and its added value compared to existing solutions;
Interdisciplinarity, risk-taking, disruption and exploratory nature are also key criteria taken into account for this call for proposals.
Who Can Apply?
A project must be led by a research unit affiliated with the E‑SENSE project. Ideally, it should involve at least two units belonging to the A2U Alliance.
The project leader must be a permanent member of a research unit.
If a research unit wishes to involve a platform, the platform’s needs must be included in the research unit’s allocated budget for the project. This must be specified in the application.
A company may participate as a partner but will not receive funding under this call for projects. The list of research units affiliated with the E‑SENSE project is available here.
Submission Guidelines
The complete application file (a single ZIP or PDF document) must be sent to e-sense@u-picardie.fr, before the deadline indicated below. An acknowledgment of receipt will be sent within five working days.
- Launch of the call: 1 September
- Closing date (application deadline): 12 November
- Notification of results: End of December
The structure of the application must follow the simple format (form + project description) provided in the “PHD” document attached to this call.
Selection Process
Eligibility and Admissibility Criteria
To be considered admissible, applications must be submitted complete and within the deadlines specified in the application document.
The application must be submitted under the authority of the unit director(s) and the corresponding thematic coordinators.
Particular attention will be paid to multidisciplinary projects and/or projects involving several E-SENSE partners.
Selection Procedures
The selection process will consist of three stages:
- Submitted proposals will be evaluated by the E-SENSE research executive committee, comprising the thematic coordinators, the scientific lead, and the project manager. The academic evaluation will be supplemented by an assessment of prior work in the field.
- Following this initial stage, the leads of the shortlisted projects will be invited to an interview with the research executive committee to present their projects and finalize the evaluation.
- The list of selected projects will then be submitted to the steering committee, which will grant final approval for project funding.
Project Implementation and Monitoring
Important: Doctoral candidates funded through this call will be E‑SENSE‑labelled and must, through a written agreement, commit to complying with the project’s requirements. This includes, for example, participating in E‑SENSE scientific events and presenting their work during thematic workshops.
All outputs resulting from this support (e.g., publications) must acknowledge the E‑SENSE project:
