The verbal behavior report of dreams in behavior therapy practice

Dreaming is a private event and the dream report (overt verbal behavior) is the description of a private event that occurred in the past. Verbal community is the responsible for shaping and reinforcing these verbal patterns, during individual's learning history. Functionally analyzing the dream reports, the therapist will be able to access the client's life history. Dreams can elicit strong emotional responses and, from the therapist's clinical hypothesis, he will choose to which functions of this verbal event must respond. Will he either reinforce tacts that are descriptive of covered behaviors or create conditions for the client to increase his discrimination about private events? In this work proposal, dreams are not understood as symbolic episodes, and the therapist is not concerned about what the client dreams but about how what he dreams is related to his repertoire and context. In this sense, dream analysis can, then, be understood as a verbal assessment. Finally, dream reports are analyzed regarding the function they can acquire in the clinical context.
