The conditioned head-turning procedure for studying early development of music perception : Why and How ?
Marc Mélen
Université de Liège, Belgique

The head-turning procedures became progressively dominant in the study of early psychological development. However, this expression can be used to refer to distinct procedures that differ according to the theoretical bases, to the age of the children, etc. The operant head-turning procedure will be the core topic of our talk. Indeed, many authors refer to it, but a careful examination of the experimental settings imagined by the experimenters leads to questions concerning the contigences of reinforcement. A variant of the operant head-turning procedure, used in the context of research concerning music perception by 6- to 10-month-old infants will be presented. Head-turning procedures will be compared with other procedures dedicated to infants, especially with different methods based on the recording of sucking behavior.

Keywords: operant head-turning procedure, infant, contingences reinforcement, sucking behavior
